Pessimism and pragmatism might be overlapping. Sometimes optimism is the futile attempt to live in a fiction. The wisest approaches that I have seen are those that accept reality and do the best with what is possible and what is real. That is just my opinion and, to be honest, I am often named as someone who tends to be pessimistic.
